Effective Education for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Training - Primary Schools only (Held over 4 Tuesday sessions)


Amelia Howe, Autism Specialist Teacher at The St. Christopher School will be holding the above Autism training suited to primary teachers and teaching assistants.

Dates: Held over 4 Tuesday sessions - 24th September, 1st, 8th 15th October 2019
Times: 9.00am—12.30pm
Venue: The St. Christopher School Family Room, Mountdale Gardens, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 4AW

Cost: The course is free to attend and is available on a first come first served basis (15 places maximum)

Audience: Primary school Teachers and Teaching Assistants

Course Overview:

Week 1 – A Whistle-Stop Tour
The history of autism, the triad of impairments, recent developments in assessment and diagnosis, sensory sensitivities, the autistic perspective

Week 2 – Communication
Speech & Language interventions, Intensive Interaction & Lego Therapy, with information from our Speech & Language Therapists

Week 3 - A Toolkit of Strategies
Social Stories, social autopsies, power cards, comic strip conversations, TEACCH, PECs. Musical interaction, Attention Autism

Week 4 – Autism and Girls / Case Study Workshop
Autism and Girls, gender differences in experiences of Autism Spectrum Conditions. Case Study Workshop – opportunities to work through case studies as a group and discuss specific problems.

Each week will include a break midway for refreshments and will allow participants to discuss particular issues with pupil(s) at their own school.

Limited parking is available at the front of the school between 9.00– 2.00pm.
